register globals on dreamhost

I have oscommerce installed on dreamhost and am getting the typical:

 

Server Requirement Error: register_globals is disabled in your PHP configuration. This can be enabled in your php.ini configuration file or in the .htaccess file in your catalog directory.

 

This link states that all dreamhost domains by default have register globals enabled except for php5.

 

I have tried the usual fix to edit my .htaccess with:

php_flag register_globals on

and i also tried

php_value register_globals 1

 

I was wondering what else i need to do in order get oscommerce to work with dreamhost? i am aware of the register globals patches but i wasnt sure if they were applicable here. Thanks alot!
