Guest
Hi People: I am looking for any help that I can get... Someone set up my webstore www.serenityonline.ca for me... and while I am able to upload my products with pictures descriptions and prices etc... I have no idea how to change my home page welcome information or how to add a link...(have tried to add a link but it doesn't work) and I don't know how to change anything on the check out page of my site... I have a friend who is willing to add my site information to her site to help me generate business, and I need to put in the "add a comment" section on the check page "please indicate coupon code" so I know the client has been directed to my site from my friends site... but I have no idea how to do this... I am a complete novice with all of this and don't udnerstand computer language...but I need to get this going and i want to understand how to create changes to my website.. I am putting this out to the universe now... please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at [email protected] as well as posting any answers any of you may have... Thanks so much... I am excited about getting this going as soon as possible... Peace and Blessings to one and all... Greta...
chooch
Hmmm... I tried to visit your site but the URL is a dead link. Learning the basics of osC isn't that hard because uploading images/setting prices etc are done from a user friendly control panel in the admin but having said that, as you are a complete novice (in your own words) I think you should try and get ahold of the person that installed your site and ask him to help you out, after all you probably paid him to it and he shouldn't leave you in the lurch like this. And peace be with you too. Upon receiving fixes and advice, too many people don't bother to post updates informing the forum of how it went. Until of course they need help again on other issues and they come running back! Why receive the information you require in good faith for free, only to then have the attitude to ignore the people who gave it to you? There's no harm in saying, 'Thanks, it worked'. On the contrary, it creates a better atmosphere. CHOOCH
spax
chooch, Maybe you should check your browser security settings. This is the second post I've read you reporting dead links.....they're fine! serenityonline, I think you'd be best posting questions one at a time, you might get more answers that way. Changing text. If the guy followed how it should be done, all the text will be in a language file. For the text on your landing page, FTP to your site, follow the directories by clicking on them and get to includes/languages/english where you will see index.php. There is another index.php in your root directory but for this, you want the one in the english directory. Download the file, make a copy of it (just incase), open it in a text editor and you should see, on the first line define('TEXT_MAIN', 'Looking for unique gifts, ritual items, incense, smudge, essential oils, books, tarot cards and more?...............'); Change the text between the single quotes to how you want it and you can use html in there, like <br /> line breaks, <p> paragraphs, <font> font tags or css <span> styles: define('TEXT_MAIN', 'New text here between single quotes....'); Then save and upload back into the english directory. overwriting the one there. If you don't find that text within the english/index.php file, then the guy that installed the store did something different and we will need a re-think. Links. If you want an external link, just use a plain html <a> anchor, wherever you want to put it. That is simplifying a little as it can get a little bit involved, putting links into info boxes. If you get stuck, we'll help you. <a href="http://www.some_domain.com" target="_blank">Go to Some Domain</a> Important to include the target attribute, as you want the link to open in a new browser window. If you want an internal link, you need to use the built in tep_href_link function. Again, if you need to do that, post back and someone will set you straight. Coupon Code. I don't know where you are with this one but, if you check the contributions section, you will find a few Coupon mods and they usually add something to checkout, for Code input. Maybe get to that once you have the first two sorted.

Hi Peter: Wow you have given me lots of "homework" thanks so much for all of your advice and help, I will give it a try...I did find directories and I got to the area where I think I can make the chages I need but I got an error... something like... "please set the right user permissions on" so of course I couldn't do anything... I emailed the guy who set me up explaining this and I am waiting for his reply back.. I think I am stuck until he gives me "permission?" I have set up the coupon for now on the site.. hopefully it will work o.k. until I can do what I want to with it... but I will try what you have suggested re; the coupon code...hopefully I won't run into the permission issue again there... I will take your advice and only post one question at a time from now on... I guess I got ahead of myself  .... Thanks for taking the time to go to my site and for giving me all this information... I appreciate your help and patience... Hopefully this can help someone else out as well... have an a great day.. Peace... Grets...
spax
Hi Greta, No problem but I will be asking questions later, so make sure you do all that homework. The permissions thing will be nothing to do with your man granting permission. Did it happen when you tried to download a file? All files have permissions set for read, write and execute for you (usually the owner but not necessarily), groups and others. If the file you tried to download is set to read only, then maybe you wasn't allowed to download, certainly not overwrite. If that is the case, you need to FTP to it, right click on it, select CHMOD or permissions and change it, temporarily, to full permissions (777). Once you have done the editing and uploaded again, you can change permissions back to what they are now. It is worth noting however, some server set ups wont allow you to change permissions via FTP, although if the problem is because the file is read only, the web guy must have set them. Is he your host also?
