Customer Welcome E-mail and Product Rows/Columns

Hello,

 

I'm trying to figure out how to change the customer welcome e-mail, where it says "Dear [surname]." I'd like for this to address the customer by their first name, if possible, though I don't know what file to change and how. Any ideas for this?

 

 

 

Also, the "New Products for (month)" section on the front page -- I'm trying to get it to show more products. By default, it's 3x3. What needs to be done to modify this so it's something like 5 columns and 6 rows rather than 3 columns and 3 rows?
