warrenerjm Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Hello Is it normal for the /rss.php?language=en from a customer or what ever to be open (green or red lights on whos who) for 16 1/2 hours? Can someone tell me what is happening please? Thanks Julie
warrenerjm Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 Hi It is now 19 hours. Please could someone explain why this one is doing this as it doesn't happen for every entry into the rss? Thanks Julie
vasttech Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Could be a newsreader service that has established a connection to your RSS file. Look at the IP address listed and go to dnsstuff.com and lookup who owns that IP address. That will give you a good starting point to know what it could be. osCommerce Knowledge Base osCommerce Documentation Contributions

The showmyip.com says Verizon Internet Services/US/71.116.101.139 Does this sound like a newsreader? New to this rss stuff & only submitted to yahoo at the moment. thanks Julie
vasttech Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 showmyip does just that, it shows your IP address. First you will have to look at who's online on the site and get the ip address of the newsreader (or whatever is showing online at the rss.php file). Then take that IP address and go to DNSSTUFF.COM and look it up. osCommerce Knowledge Base osCommerce Documentation Contributions

Hi Jeff OK I went to dnsstuff & put the ip listed above in a few of the boxes, but I don't know what I am looking at really? I can't see that it says newsreaderanywhere. If this is a person, do you know why the rss is coming on & off for this ip for hours? What to do next? Thanks Julie
vasttech Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 The IP address you listed above is your IP address if you got it from showmyip. First you need the IP address of the person or newsreader looking at your rss.php file. To get that go to your admin section and look at the whos online and get the IP address from there. If the IP address is the same, then most likely you have a newsreader on your desktop that is connected to your rss.php file. If the IP address is different then go to DNSSTUFF.COM and scroll down. The middle column will say something like IP Tests, the last item in that list is IP Information. Put the IP address and click lookup. That will tell you who what where that ip address is coming from. osCommerce Knowledge Base osCommerce Documentation Contributions

Doing what you said above this is what I get... IP address: 71.116.101.139Reverse DNS: pool-71-116-101-139.snfcca.dsl-w.verizon.net. Reverse DNS authenticity: [Verified] ASN: 19262 ASN Name: VZGNI-TRANSIT IP range connectivity: 0 Registrar (per ASN): ARIN Country (per IP registrar): US [united States] Country Currency: USD [united States Dollars] Country IP Range: 71.64.0.0 to 71.127.255.255 Country fraud profile: Normal City (per outside source): Unknown Country (per outside source): US [united States] Private (internal) IP? No IP address registrar: whois.arin.net Known Proxy? No Link for WHOIS: 71.116.101.139 Can you get any info from this? Should I stop this & if so how? Thanks again. I appreciate your help. Julie
vasttech Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 My fault, I misunderstood what you said. I thought you had said you just went to showmyip and that was the ip address it showed you. It's a verizon DSL user in the San Francisco area. You wouldn't happen to live in that area and have a newsreader on your computer (even google toolbar with an rss feed) that is connected to your page. It's hard to say exactly. If that is the only page they are connected to then it really is not to big of a deal. Since some newsreaders stay connected to the feed which an rss file is. With it being a DSL connection though I would highly doubt it is a corporation or major newsreader though. As for killing the connection you could do it a couple ways. You could restart your webserver and most likely that would kick them off, but if it is a newsreader it will just reconnect eventually. You could block that particular IP address which would prevent them from connecting again. Both of these options you would have to do through your server control panel or possibly have your webhost do for you. Before doing either of those I would make absolutely sure it wasn't you though somehow, otherwise you are going to end up blocking yourself which wouldn't be good. Now if you go to showmyip.com at the top of the page it will tell you what your IP address is in big bold numbers. Make sure the 2 aren't the same. If the two numbers are the same you have a newsreader configured to stay connected to that page. osCommerce Knowledge Base osCommerce Documentation Contributions

It is hard to explain fully sometimes. It isn't me but will them being constantly connected to this page affect my site useage? Can't see why anyone would want to stay connected? I don't change my products by the minute! I wouldn't even know how to do it & have mine set for the default weekly. I'll monitor it. Thanks. Julie
vasttech Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 As far as resource usage it should be minimal since the rss file is a text file. If it is not you, it could be a couple things. First, they have a buggy rss reader that just happens to leave the connection established. Second it could be some reader that always stays connected (no idea why they would do that). Lastly, it could just be an error on your page that even though they are disconnected for some reason it is still showing them connected. I would recommend getting them disconnected though by restarting or blocking the connection and see what happens. The only problem with blocking is that if it is a legitimate reader that is staying connected to keep abreast of products at the second they change then you would be blocking them, but the chances of that are probably 1 in a million. osCommerce Knowledge Base osCommerce Documentation Contributions
