change use templates from true to false doesn't work

When I try to edit the settings on the default module there is no error message but despite having selected TRUE for Use Templates?

Do you want to use Simple Template System?

 

It still shows as false after I click update - has anyone else had this problem? It seems like a no brainer but it is stopping me before I even get started

I didn't manage to get this to work through the gui but I did find a way to hack it in the back end - locate the file i.e. sts_default.php and find the value "false" change it to true in a text editor and then uninstall and reinstall the module - now working.
