Can't create .htaccess

I'm probably going to get smacked for using geocities. : )

 

I've been following instructions to upload the .htaccess and .htpasswd files, but Geocities won't let you upload a .txt file. I can't change it to just a .htaccess in the FTP uploader, because it won't accept that either. I tried changing it to a .jpg (even though it's made in notepad) and then using the FTP -and- the website file manager to change it, but it wouldn't accept it.

 

I tried searching for a posting on this problem, but didn't see one- so I hope I didn't just miss it.

 

 

Does anyone use Geocities too, or know a way around this?
