Brunswick Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Hi, I thought I'd start a fresh post since most threads on this subject are getting dated. I'm working in Canada! I have a number of concerns. The most recent postings suggest that PSIGate is the best Gateway(?) provider for Canadian sites. Anything new on this front? I'm just struggling to set up my first osCommerce site and gradually making headway thanks to all the help I've gotten on this forum. Now it's dawning on me that apart from a rockin' shopping cart I've also got to be concerned about all the "traps" associated with online CC transactions. If I understand the issues correctly I will need: 1. a shopping cart; 2. a payment gateway; 3. an Internet merchant account; As I understand it, PSIGate will supply number 2 and, if needed, number 3. A quick question on merchant accounts. If you already have a bricks-and-mortar merchant account, is an Internet merchant account something different? Do you arrange this through the same bank that has your existing merchant account? Does anybody have any experience with fees charged by Canadian institutions? My final question. How well does osCommerce integrate with the PSIGate gateway. I notice it is on the payment module list. Are there any potential problems I need to be aware of or would I be safe to pursue their option? Anyway, that'll do for now. I'd appreciate any input you can offer. -Hank  Quote
milo90 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Hello Hank, I'm in BC. My store is going online next week, after many months of work.... it is highly customized. I spent many long hours researching those questions and much more. Here are some answers: 1) An internet merchant account is separate from your bricks-and-mortar account. Just go to your bank, and they will open up a separate business chequing account for you. It is just a dedicated account. Some gateway/processors can do this for you, but the fees are higher than if you just went to your bank and opened a new business chequing account, because your bank will have activity/fee packages. 2) Fees - I use a credit union rather than a bank, because their fees are a lot less. (Started out four years ago with a bank for my bricks-n-mortar store, and just about got fee'd out of existence.) 3) Payment gateways/payment processors for Canadians using oscommerce: PsiGate, InternetSecure, ViaKlix, Beanstream, Moneris. They all have different options and rates, so it is important to check them all, talk to someone at each place, to find the one that is best suited to your business. Hope that helps. Cheers! Quote
