evalguy Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Can't find an answer to this yet... I want to offer these shipping rates (from the US): - Continental US: flat-rate UPS - Alaska: By weight USPS, and flat-rate UPS - Hawaii: By weight USPS, and flat-rate UPS - Other international: by weight, USPS, and I'd like to lump Europe into on set of rates, Australia and surrounding into another set of rates, etc. ...etc, etc, etc. "By weight" means I'll plug in pre-looked-up values such as $8 up to the first pound, $10 for up to 2lbs, etc. I do NOT intend to look up rates dynamically by tying into USPS's website etc. For this setup, it seems I'll need zone-based shipping and flat-rate shipping. But I'm a bit confused... First, for zone-based shipping the countries and ISO codes are listed in Admin-->Locations, and I assume the ISO code used is based on what the user selects as their shipping address. It seems I have to enter the ISO country codes in each zone under Admin-->Shipping-->Zone Rates. So how do I split up the US into Continental vs. Alaska vs. Hawaii? I can create 3 ISO codes for the US, but then the user will have to select "US-Alaska", "US-Hawaii", or "US-continental" ...??? Seems a bit odd. Is there a better (more transparent to the user) way around this? Is there a way to tell zone-based shipping to use country and specific states for a specific shipping rate? Also, so then what is Admin-->Locations-->Zones for? For the flat-rate shipping, this is again asking for Shipping Zones, but the pull-down to select the shipping zone shows the entries I have as Tax Zones....!? That's very odd. Is this an error or something I'm not understanding? Finally, it seems as though I can only have one flat rate in the system. Can't I have a flat rate for the continental US, then another flat rate for Hawaii, etc? Thanks, -Neil.
Guest Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 read this post http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?s=&...st&p=691538 and the osc documentation also mentions how to setup the tax zones. http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/documentation once you setup your tax zones you can then assign them to the shipping, payment and order_total modules. There is zone pull-down that will be populated with the grouped zones. However it all depends what the customer is setup as the payment and shipping addresses. Based on these addresses shipping modules will then show up when you enable a specific tax zone for each
evalguy Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 I'd been thru the docs, but it states what each module is for and does not explain it. That post you referenced really discusses tax zones and I have only one tax zone -- Florida. Are you suggesting that I need to create TAX zones for each SHIPPING zone otherwise? That would be odd. I did try using Tax Zone codes as the zone identifiers for the zone-based shipping setup but it is apparently not checking those. And I would expect that as the zone-based shipping asks for "Zone 1 Countries". Still confused.

Yes. Sounds odd, works great. I did try using Tax Zone codes as the zone identifiers for the zone-based shipping setup but it is apparently not checking those. And I would expect that as the zone-based shipping asks for "Zone 1 Countries". Still confused. Think of tax zones as zones, period. As enigma1 stated, you need to create a new zone (in osc referred to as a "tax zone") for each shipping zone you want to have, then you can enable different shipping modules for each zone, thus allowing you to have different shipping scenarios for different zones. Do, or do not. There is no try. Order Editor 5.0.6 "Ultra Violet" is now available! For support or to post comments, suggestions, etc, please visit the Order Editor support thread.
evalguy Posted March 18, 2007 Author Posted March 18, 2007 Here's a test I just tried... Created one TAX zone -- "Florida". Then placed an order with shipping to Florida, US. Now, I tried 3 different setups for the country identifier/code in Zone 1 rates: "US", "FL", and "Florida". (1) For "US", the shipping rate is calculated correctly. (2) For "FL", it says there is no shipping method available (in the checkout procedure). (3) For "Florida", it says there is no shipping method available (in the checkout procedure). So that tells me that it is calculating the zone-based shipping rates based on country (using ISO country code), rather than the setup under "Zones" or under "Tax Zones". I must be missing something else here if you say it is calculated by "Tax Zone". Is there an example anywhere that can explain this?
Guest Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 you should not touch the country or state codes. Did you actually read the post I mentioned?
evalguy Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 Yep, I read quite a bit of that thread which was about taxes, and specifically that post which stated "Shipping is different and you should done with the tax first." But nothing else was stated about setting up the shipping. I am going to setup a test with different tax zones to see how it affects shipping. Still trying to figure out the details.
