IronMac Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Ok..this may be a simple n00b question but I helped move a friend's OS Commerce site a couple of weeks back and the size of the files was about 30 megs in total. Well, I checked in her CPanel today on her new host and it's occupying 70 megs!!! The vast majority of the space is taking up by her public_html/catalog and public_html/images folders. Is this normal? Or, are we doing something wrong here? She only has 200 items at the moment but she has another 300 that she would like to put up and, at this rate, she is bumping up against the limit of her hosting plan. Any clarifications would be appreciated. Thanks!
usernamenone Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Reduce the size of images and make sure the resolution of images are saved at or around 72. She must have really cheezie hosting. Hosting can be found or around 3 bucks a month with 10 gig webspace.
Guest Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Yes you can get hosting for 3 dollars but remember you get what you pay for. 3 dollars a month don't expect support don't expect uptime don't expect anything other than the space Also pay attention to the hosting majorly because they offer 10GB of space and then give you 25mb of mysql space. pay more get more. You don't get a BMW for the price of a Chevy. Heck you can't get a Honda for the price of a Chevy. Reduce the size of images and make sure the resolution of images are saved at or around 72. She must have really cheezie hosting. Hosting can be found or around 3 bucks a month with 10 gig webspace.
IronMac Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Thanks for the pic suggestion. So, I guess it's normal for OS Commerce to have such large folders? She currently is paying US$25 a year for 75 megs and the tech support has been excellent. Her last host was slightly more expensive but never set up backups properly in OS Commerce and went down for over a month at one point and never told her about it. She only found out when a competing hosting company emailed her to tell her that the site was down. She lost everything and had to re-upload it all on a dial-up connection. With over 500 items in her full line, I think she may have to go with a US$60/yr plan that will give her 400 megs.
Guest Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 My entire site is just over 5 megs. Check your files to see is there are any HUGE ones and the size of the images. 500 images should only take up a 3-4 megs at most, if optimized.

Only 3-4 megs for 500 images? Hrmm...there's something seriously wrong here then. I may have to dig deeper into what her site is like...
radders Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 200 MB for an osC site with 500 images is not unreasonable. The thumbnails won't take up much space but 200K per large image is not unreasonable which would give you 100MB for these alone if my maths is correct. Maybe another 30MB for small and medium-sized thumbs plus something for the programs.
radders Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 One more thought - see how much space the trashcan is occupying! If you have uploaded files and then unpacked them you may have remembered to delete the zip file but then not emptied the trashcan.

♥bruyndoncx Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I think you'll find sites with all kinds of numbers. Ours is just under 200MB right now with 3000 products setup (in 2 languages), the database is fairly big at 130Mb mainly because of webanalytics data stored. For the images (I'm currently loading as much as I can, but only 1100 products currently have images), they are resized on the fly and cached on the server, this gives additional overhead and wastes space, but I can't bother to prepare and optimize the pictures manually or even in batch offline. Overall for me diskspace is cheap, I'm always running out of time ... P.S. There are also some PDF and other bulky files on the webserver using in advertising. It's pretty handy to have an area to upload files for your printing company or ad campaigns etc ... KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support). So if you are still here ? What are you waiting for ?! Find the most frequent unique errors to fix: grep "PHP" php_error_log.txt | sed "s/^.* PHP/PHP/g" |grep "line" |sort | uniq -c | sort -r > counterrors.txt
♥bruyndoncx Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Note, if you use easypopulate to import or export products, you can also be accumulating files in the temp directory. Ausgirl Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Hello, I have 159 images & my image folder takes up 4.10mgs. Im only a little baby site with under 100 products yet my Disk Space Usage is 252.98 Megabytes & MySQL Disk Space is 1.78 Megabytes. That doesnt sound right if as mentioned above is just under 200MB right now with 3000 products! What am I doing wrong? My trash can in cPanel is empty. I do have files in the catalog/tmp folder which takes up 24.20 Meg. Maybe I should delete everything in there? I just havent been game enough, even if that was empty, that would still leave 228.78 Megs that Im using for my little baby site.
IronMac Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Wow!!! Lots of info here to work with!!! Sounds like this could be a pretty important issue and I'll be digging deeper...
