I installed SEO friendly URL's , dynamic metatags, advertise and post like crazy. my page rank is still 0!!. how ever my alexa rating is 1,800,000 around that. not the best but since there are millions of sites in the world, it makes me feel a bit better!.

When can I expect to see my page rank move up? or am i doing something wrong? Please let me know

Those things you did don't have anything to do with PR. That is solely dependent upon the number and quality of the links to your shop. You can submit your site to various Link Directories to get some one-way links. And then install the Links Manager contribution and start a link exchange program to get as many links as possible that are related to your product line. After 50 or so, you should see a change in your PR. Although, google may not update their listings for a while. Just keep adding links and eventually you will see it jump up.

Hi,

You need to make sure that the links to your site are quality links. Personally I would steer clear of link farms. While I don't believe you can be penalised for having your site there (otherwise your competitors would add your link to them), you certainly won't get credited with a high page rank.

Really, the best way to get a good PageRank is to manually submit your site to as many relevant directories and sites as you can. Blogging is good too. Ensure that your blogs are keyword rich. Use a tool like wordtracker (expensive, but worth it, IMO) to identify and recommend keyword and key-phrases. Make sure the pages on your site are also keyword rich - but remember that your customers (as well as search engines) need to read them too. There's an articles contribution that allows you to create, well, articles. You could use these to create lots of interesting and keyword rich content that the search engines will love.

Search in google for "add url" or "voip directory" and look for submit or add url links. Many are free. Some charge. Some require reciprocal links. e.g.

Submit your site to http://dmoz.org. Make sure the site is submitted to as many search engines as you can. Search in google for "search engine" for a list.

Hope that helps a little.

Oh, I would say that 2 months is optimistic for gaining a good PageRank. It can take that long just to get your site to appear in the directories and search engines.

Submitting to dmoz.org seems a waste of time to me. First, I don't think the system was working for a while, then I keep submitting my site and I got this feeling that my competitor is the editor of my category. What a shame? Anyone has anything different then my experience in the past 3 months?

There was indeed a problem with dmoz. There was a catastrophic crash on 20th October 2006 which affected the backups (nightmare) too. The issues were resolved just before Christmas. Since then editors (like me) have been battling to restore the directory.

I registered as an editor because I wanted to promote my online store. I consider myself an ethical person, so I'm happy to list my competitors too. I try to be fair and unbiased. If you want to get a quick listing in dmoz, I suggest you register too. Be open and honest about your reasons for joining and your affiliations, and you'll be approved. Then you just have to do a good and unbiased job.

Just wanted to add to this post and second the above statement (although, I don't think the dmoz is a waste but difficult to get listed sometimes).

I have been submitting my main site ( http://www.enchantedgc.com/ ) to them since 2003 and still haven't been listed. Also haven't received a response to any emails (which were very polite I might add). I finally applied to be an editor to a category that my site would fit into and never received a response to that either.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

That is common with DMoz. If there isn't an editor for the section you apply for, you probably stand a good chance of getting approved. But if there is an editor, you won't be approved or probably even replied to. Also, if there is an editor, it is unlikley that you will receive a reply from any emails sent to him/her. It is just too much trouble to rpely to them so most don't. They used to have a section in their forums where one of the moderators would check the status of your link. But they got so many requests that they changed it to where one could only ask every six months or so and then suspended it altogether due to the number of requests, although it might be available again. The above is based on personal experience. I am not speaking on behalf of DMoz.

In the end, since it takes so long to get listed, it is probably better to spend your time building up your link exchanges. If you get enough of the right kind, it won't matter if you are listed with DMoz.

I remember when the forum was there. Even then it was difficult to get a response. I guess it's understandable that as a volunteer you shouldn't have to put up with webmasters demanding to know why they haven't been listed and I'm sure there are some very impolite people that think their website deserves more attention than others and take it out on the editors. I just don't understand why they even let you email the editors if they don't reply anyway.

Jack, do you know if 13 robots is a decent amount to have crawling your site per month or should it be much higher? I work for a catalog company who has about 34 robots crawling but they also do about $12,000,000.00 / Year in web sales alone so they are waaaayyyy out of my league.

I agree with the link exchanges. That's helped quite a bit. Free directories are always good as long as you can stick to ones that are related to your site.

You can't really put a number on the bots. There are thousands of them out them, mostily private concerns, that don't do your site any good. So a dozen of them (if you wanted to set it at a dozen) wouldn't be a good limit. You should install the latest spiders file (in contribution section). That might track them better. You can also disallow them form there. Of course, many of the ones I mentioned would just ignore it anyway, most likely.
