ok I have down loaded the oscommerce to my desk top. I am confused, do I need a special program on my computer such as microsoft excel or something similar. How do I upload this document or any documents and where am I supposed to upload them. Where do I find my server, myphp admin, my root directory, who is my host for this. My domain is registered with sturdy hosting but they know nothing about oscommerce. Can my site run properly with out doing most of the behind the scene things. I am live so if someone were to decide to purchase something would it be right. Can I finish things such as shipping info, checkout instructions, shopping cart, and begin dragging and dropping my other products. I am light years away from understanding all this computer languages and steps in this bussiness. Please help me.

Thanks

Lisa

The place where your domain is hosted has to supply you with PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin. Further to that if they don't know anything about osCommerce at all then you should consider hosting somewhere where they do know about osCommerce.

osCommerce is a dynamic PHP based programme, which requires a webserver and a database to run, so you can't open it on your computer like you can an html page in your browser. However, you can turn your computer into an offline web server (Intranet) which allows you to run osCommece offline to make changes and test it befoe you upload changes to the online website (Internet).

There is an all-in-one package which installs an Apache web server, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin onto your computer in a 1-click install. It's called XAMPP, but you don't want to use the latest version which uses mySQL 5, so download this version (for Windows based PCs and not Macs):

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading...e_mirror=heanet

There is one for Macs called XAMPP for Mac (beta).

  • 1 year later...

I've made modifications in my osCommerce shop files and they are in a test file on my hosting site. I want to try out my shop on a test basis. I have not uploaded to my live website. Can anyone please tell me how to do this? I plugged in my site/test/shop/admin, but the url says site/shop/admin, so that didn't work. I don't want to mess up my live site. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! mh
