Help working on live site !!!

I have until now been working on my live site making changes to files - very dangerous !!!

anyway the time has come for me to stop this before i do damage..

what does everyone else do ??

i am assuming i have to load the website onto my hard disk make the changes test the site and then up load again to my hosting ??

Say i make changes and then upload in a months time, will it mean i have lost all my customer information in that month ??

could someone give me some guidance please on how i can change my site without risking it all ??

Thanks

There are two options: create a sub-directory in your hosting account and use that to test or install a mini-server on your computer using a package like EasyPHP or XAmpp (as well as others). The latter is probably the best option since you will always have a good copy on your computer for backup. Things like customer information will not be lost since that is in the database, which is different than your files. You will need your own copy of the database in either scenario and any changes you make to it will need to be made to the live one, if you want to keep them.
