on my hosting cpanel I get a memo that there is a newer version of oscommerce for upgrade (not the new alpha version) Can I update without any problems or will it overwrite all my modifications and layout and have to start all over again?

There is usually an update text file in the updates that explains what was changed, why, and what files to update. As long as you backup the files before changing anything you can revert back if it causes problems.

Hi

I upgraded via my cpanel with hosting company and all my configs and changes were gone, as if just installing from scratch. Luckily I could restore but now unsure as to how to upgrade other then going through all the files to find changes

Any ideas?

You will need to update the files manually as the update txt file shows. Just download the newest version from the tab above: Solutions->Download, unzip, and find the update.txt file

We have many customizations littered through many files on a client's site. We want to apply the latest upgrade for security reasons. This is also my first exposure to OSCommerce.

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade line by line or reapply the customizations to a new install. It seems to me that the latter is the safer bet. The live version wouldn't be touched during the upgrade. However, if I say install to a directory called "catalog2" can everything be migrated to it? Can "catalog2" be renamed to "catalog" or will there be references in sub-folders to the "catalog2" that will have to be changed?

Thanks,

Jim
