Trentide
IF I make changes, I don't want any down time trying to fix mistakes. How is that done precisely? Thanks So Much, Jason

radders
Make sure you have a copy of you site to use for testing as well. You can set this up on a home computer using xampp.
Trentide
Ha! I gathered that! Now, I imagine that one needs to make some kind of backup site? Then are you supposed to check it to see if it works? Just wondering out loud, Jason
Trentide
OOpss sorry. My last reply was for dj monkey. I didnt see your reply, radders. Ok, does xampp work on a mac? I was thinking an easier way would be that I could create a folder on my computer called "alt" or something and have a second, test site on that, thereby seeing if the test site actually works on the web because it would be on the web. Does this make sense? Thanks, Jason
djmonkey1
For major changes I *usually* have a test site set up to run through the changes, work out any bugs, etc. For go-time I always make the database change(s), if necessary, first, then follow up with all the changed files. Make all the necessary changes, upload the files all at the same time, and cross my fingers. Some other possible tips: if you're going to be working on the checkout flow, disable the catalog first and put up a notice or two that you're doing some work and everything will be all sorted out in a few hours. Also, try working at oddball hours (say, Sunday at 2 am) to minimize lost business. Do, or do not. There is no try. Order Editor 5.0.6 "Ultra Violet" is now available! Trentide
That's great. Thanks. Couple of question, though. How do you set up a test site? What's go time? What's check out flow? Thanks, Jason
djmonkey1
My test site is just a entire different website. I installed a fresh osCommerce, new database, etc, and now use the test site just to play with code. Go-time is when it's time to actually make your major change to your live site. It's not a technical term by any means. The check out flow is the checkout process of your website, the pages the customer interacts with to complete the sale (checkout_shipping.php, checkout_payment.php, etc). Do, or do not. There is no try. Order Editor 5.0.6 "Ultra Violet" is now available! For support or to post comments, suggestions, etc, please visit the Order Editor support thread. Trentide
Instead of having a fresh install of OSC. Could I have a copy of my website in a subfolder, somewhere, and make the changes, check it online, as long as there are no links to my copy site? Would that work?
