angelkelly Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Hi all! I am a complete novice to the website building game so please bear with me.... I have bought my domain, secured a host and am in the middle of building my website. By this I mean I am in the final stages of completion for all my artwork, backgrounds, logo and content but I havent uploaded anything yet. My main query is this... is the OSCommerce template a template for the whole site? Do I just upload it to a blank page and then put in my own pictures, logos and backgrounds - or do I need to finish building my entire site then add it? This is probably a really stupid question  - but the answers only easy if you know! I would really appreciate any replies! Thank you, Kelly
rubygirl Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Kelly, I'm not really sure what you are asking. As for OSCommerce - there isn't a stock "template" for the site. There is a stock "look" but that's it. You really can't take an html template and upload it and hope that it "takes" osCommerce successfully. Everything you want to change for the look is done in php - which is what OS is written in. If I were you, I would install OS first, then see what it is you feel comfortable changing after looking at the script.
angelkelly Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Hi Rubygirl thank you for replying! Basicaly I am hosted with Windows Live Beta and used their templates for my site (ie home page, FAQ page etc). I put some content in and tried to change the colour scheme but I'm not happy with the look. I wanted to know - if I upload oSCommerce will it wipe out everything that I had previosuly done (which is not a problem :-) ). And can I build my site with just OSCommerce? I had been told that it was only a 'shopping cart' and that it intergrated with my pre existing site - but reading the forums I can see it might be more than that. I have a specific look in mind and have done all my own artwork, back grounds, banners and logos, even my own animation to include in the site. I want to know the best way of creating my own look but still have the shoppong cart option of OSCommerce. I know I'm not phrasing this very well, you'll have to forgive me I am a total newbie to website stuff. Thank you, Kel.
rubygirl Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 okay - if you upload OS to your host - it most likely won't wipe anything out because you were probably building in html and OS is coded in php. I personally think OS rocks! Yes you can use it as your own site, but I've been working with it since 2000 and am pretty comfortable with php. If you are comfortable working with php as well, then you can do just about anything with OS. Yes OS can just be a shopping cart and for you that may be a good place to start, but then you will have a particular design for your site and then most likely the default OS look which quite honestly isn't pretty to look at. It really depends on your skills. I would recommend, installing OS and diving in - see what you can do - and remember there are lots of members here who will offer advice for no charge and many developers here as well that you could hire to assist as well. good luck!
angelkelly Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Thank you! Dive in I shall :-) Thanks Ruby, I really appreciate it!
