404 Error at last stage of install

When i click the catalog or administration buttons after OScommerce install I get an "Apache needs to close error" followed by a blank white page. If I access the page directly through another browser tab I get a "404 error - Object not found". However I know apache is still running when I test, so it never closed - only generated an error.

I am using xampp and have followed all other instructions per quick install guide to a tee. ...php.ini (global variables ON) and changed permissions on configure.php files etc.

I need help but please be patient since I am not very knowledgeable in this field.

thank you very much.

with xampp, osc needs to be installed under the htdocs folder, eg, htdocs/catalog/ and url will read: http://127.0.0.1/catalog, if not, then you might get the 404 page not found error. But this is only one possibility, dont know why you got the mysql error.

it is localhost/catalog

no index.php

I copied the url from my browser:- http://localhost/catalog/index.php. In this case it gives the "Apache needs to close" error and returns a blank page...no 404 error. Think you've resolved the first problem but still have the apache issue. Thanks again.

Ok - I just tried localhost/catalog. Unfortunately got the same error "Apache needs to close" and then the connection timed out. I have checked the permissions of the catalog folders. I only know how to do this in windows by right clicking on the folder and selecting properties. In each case there was a semi shaded check mark in the read only box. I unchecked this (the only other box present is called "Hidden" and is not checked) and clicked apply, then confirmed to apply for all subfolders. HOWEVER, when I recheck the folders the read-only box is again checked with a semi shaded check mark. Can't get rid of it...am I doing this right ???

I found an article on how to change my permissions by restarting to safe mode (running XP home ed) and have now ensured that all catalog folders are read and writable. In fact they appeared to be already read and writable. Nevertheless I again tried to open catalog and got the same apache error followed by the connection timeout. Beginning to hate this....
