how to put a top href

i've been trying to insert a top link in the footer of my pages but when i click on the ling the URL called is the directory where my shop is and not the current URL with a # at the end . can anyone help me on how to insert a top anchor. :(

the anchor at the top should read

<a name ="top">

 

and the link at the bottom

<a href = "#top"> back to top </a>

 

i think that is right but it's a long time since i have touched anchors

Thanks for the reply Mooby but that does not work. For what i know with HTML you have the right to use <a href = "#top"> back to top </a> OR <a href = "#"> back to top </a> without having to give a name to the anchor and i will work but with OsCommerce it just won't what happen is that it takes out the page name and it does a #top on the index page of the shop. I've also tried naming the anchor but that won't work either. I've even tryied even giving the name of the page using PHP_SELF but even there i lose my variables.

 

any other idea.

Thank again for the help Matt i think i've finally got it i use this $REQUEST_URI insted of $PHP_SELF and i've been able to have the name of the page together with my variables.

 

 

<a href="<?echo $REQUEST_URI?>#">TOP</a>
