Installing osc onto XAMPP 1.6.0a !!GOTCHA!!

I have recently gone live with my site (Hurrah! ;) ) however now it is live I need a development/sandbox environment which the 'most excellent' XAMPP would appear to be the ideal solution, however this is my first time trying to do this and after setting everything up, switching to PHP 4 turning Register Globals on and ensuring I have a database and user setup specifically for osc and going through the osc install everything appears fine - however as soon you complete the install and go into either the catalog or admin tool I get a Windoze error informing me the Appache HTTP has an encountered and is closing (Boo! :().

 

The way I have got aroung this is by going back to 1.4.16 which appears fine (although I do keep getting some 'odd' windows popping up)
