Creating Templates from Scratch

I am looking for a few good tips on how to do my own template. I don't want to download a template and completely rewrite all my changes. So I need to start from the beginning and do my own.

Is there a list some where of all the files that need to changed when creating a template? If not anyone out there willing to give advice to a semi-newbie on where to get started and what all needs to be changed on osCommerce to create a custom template?

Thanks!

I know you said that you don't want to download a template and rewrite it, but I suggest you do this. You will be able to check which files you need to edit and how to do this...

I actually already tried this and the template was simply a complete revision of osCommerce. No way to tell what files were changed or why. Reason I made the post in the first place.

If you know of a template that clearly shows what files were edited and/or changed please let me know.

Have you looked at the Simple Template Contribution (STS)?

I have heard [well actually read] that if I intend to add contirbutions I should not use STS as it conflicts with other contributions.

I would really like to just find a list of the php files that need to be addressed when creating a new look for the store from the ground up. Either that or link me to a good resource for free templates as I cannot afford to buy one just yet. Maybe once the site is actually running and making money I can buy one but not at this point.

List of files?

Virtually every file in /catalog/ dependant on how much you want to change.

Basic changes can be made through alteration of catalog/stylesheet.css

No wonder there aren't any tutorials on how to do this any where on the net. It is a HUGE pain in the arse.

I really wish OS could be redesigned to utilize a template system like wordpress, joomla, and other php based programs from content management. They make it easy for the user to make the application look like the site, but no osCommerce. Shame. :(

And I really wish it remains as it is now.
