whamel Posted October 12, 2002 Posted October 12, 2002 Earlier this week after spending a month entering data into my MySQL database and offloading it up to my web host my web space was revoked, my account suspended, and I was accused of many things I had no intent to do. All of this was done without the slightest warning on their part and they are being very vague in answering my questions. Their basic reason for suspending me was because of my running (as far as I can tell) OsCommerce and told me that it contained a modified version of 'post nuke' to force all traffic to the site to be prioritized over any other traffic. Well, after I started getting visitors (finally) they pulled my plug, deleted my data, and refuse to allow me access to get my latest copy of my SQL dump off the server. Maybe I missed something, but does OsCommerce use modified Post Nuke to draw down a server in any way? To make it short and simple - I got 15,000 hits in 1 day, 10,000 the next day, and 14,000 the next day after I started a very heavy advertising campaign (which I'm still paying for) and it now has nowhere to go. I'm not that savvy on Post Nuke - in fact, I had no idea what it was until they made these accusations. So basically my question is geared towards my future plans - am I going to have this problem everywhere I go and should I simply plan on setting up my own server and hosting it myself or is this hosting service just totally off base and complaining because I actually am getting visits to my site. Of note - I did pay for unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage space so I honestly don't feel they should be complaining there. I do see their point if the application is interrupting the flow of data on their server though. I plan to stick with OsCommerce since it's the only thing that's proven itself to be a viable solution for the quantity of product I carry (upwards of 30,000 unique products) - everything else just seems to die out. And for the curious - I was forced to switch to a semi-free server and simply display a page informing everyone of what happened. I'm sure this is going to take me quite a while to recover the reputation of my business. If anyone has any thoughts on how I should handle this hosting service I would very much appreciate an e-mail. I don't quite know what to do about it, but I feel I've been improperly evicted. Thanks, Wade
Mark Evans Posted October 12, 2002 Posted October 12, 2002 but does OsCommerce use modified Post Nuke to draw down a server in any way? Absoulutely not :) All of the code is osC was written by the osC team or contributors with the exception of the mail class which was cleared for use by the author. I don't quite know what to do about it, but I feel I've been improperly evicted. You have!!! I would move to another ISP. Diverse Posted October 13, 2002 Posted October 13, 2002 had similar problems with hostonce. just wondering what isp you were on so i can avoid that one.
mattice Posted October 14, 2002 Posted October 14, 2002 Your sudden rise in hits might have something to do with Google spidering your site.... there is a big thread on that. If I were you I would sue the f*ck out of them for not giving me what they promised and what I paid for. If you have paid your bill they cannot refuse you your property (the sql dump)... I would consult a lawyer over this, especially because your still paying for a campaign that will only make you look bad because visitors get a 'server doesn't exist' And I am curious why it is that Post Nuke would do such a thing? I've seen hundreds of PostNuke sites around... all waiting to be thrown out by their ISP???? I'm guessing your ISP has offered you a cheap contract for unlimited bandwidth and couldn't believe your traffic... you might not be the milkcow they saw you for in the first place.. so they kick you out with an absolute bs story. Good luck, Mattice "Politics is the art of preventing people from taking part in affairs which properly concern them"
Paul_C Posted October 14, 2002 Posted October 14, 2002 I agree with mattice. Your hosting company should be liable for damages here. Consult a lawyer. "It's a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word." -- Andrew Jackson
