The same questions .... the same problems .....

I see the same questions time and time again, oscommerce is great e-commerce software but, needs the following to be looked out.

1. The header section needs to be able to be adjusted a lot easier, so that the average person (not a techo)or business can put their own logo etc..

2. Like many other shopping cart type programs, you normally have a section to download and upload CSV files, so that you are not entering items one at a time.

3. Photo's enter them into one part of the software, then when displayed one right, the other out of balance.

4. Editing .PHP files, wow what a nightmare...

I think their are some very nice people on this site, and I thank you very much for your help and assitance, but I affraid for most of us you are talking a different language. I have been on the net for almost 8 years now and this PHP stuff is just to hard.

So... from most of us it looks like using a shopping cart thats a little easier to use.

Have a good guys ... bye for now

Take a look in /catalog/includes/header.php. Look for the oscommerce.gif, and replace it with your gif. Easy enough.

You can use a program called myphpadmin that will allow you to do just this. I use this quite frequently. myphpadmin is free, you can search for it on your favorite search engine. It is also VERY easy to use, even for an end user.

Not exactly sure what you mean by out of balance, but it soulds like you mean that the images are distorted when the are resized. You can change the size that is displayed in the Admin section, and if you play with it a little, I'm usre you can get it to display without distorting.

4. Editing .PHP files, wow what a nightmare...

Not for programmers, and If you ask one to help I'm sure It would be no problem. I've seen some pretty top notch programmers offer you help for free.

Well, its a good thing you didn't waste any money. When you find a solution that costs as little as this one does, and give you more, please let me know.

The open source community is definatly for people who are willing to learn a little.

Good luck!

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

What is with all of these recent "This software is too ...! I'm leaving!" posts lately? What are the points of these posts? If you can't figure something out, ask a question. Don't just complain and then say I'm leaving all dramatically. If we can help, we'll help. We're not going to move harder just because you say you're leaving to go to another shopping cart.

But i understand the easiness off this. It was a well developed program. And like most there are alot of fixer upper thing to do. But it works. More than ICODE - Accware. More than other easy to use 30,000 dollar software. This has to be the biggest, the best step that I have ever done for my company.

And the fact that you can get help like this, using this messageboard. Its great. Thanks alot

I guess for people with the attitude that you have portayed yes :(

There are plenty of e-commerce packages out there which you can pay for but I bet the support is nowhere near the quality that this community generates.

Maybe you should look at commerce server from m$!! Only costs ?12000 with a support cost of ?200 per support call!! Maybe that will do what you require :)

Actually this thread/comment/response hits at the heart of OSC's weakness. It is written and developed by coding geniuses. Most would-be store owners are not coders and don't want to learn PHP - they want to sell their goods.

It's fairly obvious that no store is going to want the OScommerce logo across the top of it, so wouldn't it be a good idea to configure that from Admin > Configuration > My Store?

Ver 3 should really look as user-friendly configuration system. - but oh-ho then I'll be out of a job... Yeh - OK leave it as it is.

I think this is bunch of doo-doo.

If you follow a few simple directions osc runs out of the box.

There is a degree of customization the average person can do.

If you are looking for all the bells and whistles and you don't know how, and are not willing to invest the time to learn, there are plenty here who will do so for a fair compensation. Perhaps even free, but I would not expect that much.

This IS Open Source. By it's nature weither it a "stable release" or not it is in a constant state of development.

I already did learn how to customiseOSC - it took about 3 months on and off. I have 3 live sites and another two in construction. I'm a designer, but whether your avergae pontential store owner has the time to learn 'one or two trick a day for a year', I very much doubt. My clients have their work cut out sending emails.

Nevertheless, I feel a fantastic product is marred by inadiquate instructions and complicated methods of customization. You only need to look at the hundreds of topics here - and on the old forums from would-be users to see how many have problems with OSC - I wonder how many give up. Commercial ecommerce packages must be very thankful!
