User registration approval

We need to manage the first time user registration introducing a check on our side to approve or not that specific user that is trying to register.

 

We would like to keep the actual registration form (adding some other info we need...) but then the user will receive a confirmation EMail only after we have done some background checking on the user.

 

How can we achieve that?
