owl17sb
Hi It has been ages since I have done anything on my website... It has been live for nearly a year and I have never got to grips with the Header Tag, Page Naming things so it is not ranked at all on any of the search engines. I installed the contribution Header Tags Controller and have tried to put in page names but I don't think I am doing it right as nothing seems to work. I am not a techkki and I need things in plain english and some of the information I have read has just managed to confuse me so sorry if this has been explained before - I have either not been able to find it or I have not fully understood it. I will try and explain exactly the bits I don't understand... In the Header Tags Controller page on my Admin Site it says to "Add a New Page" This option adds the code for a page into the files mentioned above. Note that it does not add an actual page. To add a page, enter the name of the file, with or without the .php extension.. What is the file name I should be using here - I have set up various Categories and Products - are any of these the file name. Within each product I have filled in the "Meta Tags Information" The "Product Title Tag" & "Product Description Tag" I have filled this in with the name of the Product. The product keywords tag I have used a couple of words that best describe what I am selling. I am selling cards so my fields have been populated as follows for a Birthday Card that is called Feather Hat.... Product Title Tag - Feather Hat Product Description Tag - Feather Hat Product Keyword Tag - birthday_handcrafted_card_feather_hat What is this information used for? I am really struggling with this and I know this should be simple - I have been told by so many people that this is the easy bit but I just don't seem to be able to grasp it. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :'(
Jack_mcs
All of your products and categories are handled automatically by Header Tags. The Add page option is just for adding other pages, like contact us, privacy, shipping or some other new page you have added. You usually don't need that option unless you have added unique pages that need to be setup. The Product Title Tag, Product Description Tag and Product Keyword Tag fields are used in the page for that product. Let's say you have a product named feathered hat and it can be reached at http://www.yoursite.com/feathered_hat_p_36.html. If you fill in the tags in admin and then go to that product in your browser, you will see the title is the same as what you filled in. The description and keywords are also there but are not visible without using the browsers View Source option since they are meant just for the search engines. owl17sb
Thanks for the reply Jack but when I go into my Product Feather Hat in my live site the name in the browser is as follows: http://yoursite.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_17&products_id=70 I have filled in all the info as previously stated against the product but have not done anything in the Header Tags Controller - I don't know what to do here to get the page name "Feather Hat" to appear when I click on that product in my live site. What am I doing wrong Thanks
Jack_mcs
Did you run the fill tags option? owl17sb
I have filled in the information on the Text Control Option of the Header Tags with the appropriate information. The options I have filled in are: Default Allprods index product_info I have filled in the followining information in every box title - Handmade Greeting Cards description - Handmade Greetings Cards,Birthday Cards Keywords - Handmade Greeting Cards,Birthday,Handcrafted All of these options are filled in but the allprods title appears in red. The boxes next to the titles that are ticked are HTTA HTDA HTKA Products_new specials products_review_info these are all empty and the titles are displayed in red. I have then run update. In the Fill Tags Option I have ticked "fill all tags" and the question Fill products meta description with Products Description? I have said YES. I have run update and get the message All Category tags have been filled. All Manufacturers tags have been filled. All Product tags have been filled. When I then go to my live site and view one of my products I still get the same path name http://yoursite.com/shop/product_info.php?...;products_id=88 I really am at a loss as to what else to do - I must be doing something wrong. Thanks for all your help so far - If I can get this sorted might I get listed on Search Engines?
Jack_mcs
Your confusion might be in what Header Tags does. You say: "I still get the same path name" and then show a url. Header Tags doesn't change the url at all. If you are looking to have that change, you need to install the Ultimate SEO contribution. owl17sb
Thanks Jack - that was what I was expecting the Header Tags to do. Is that path name to my products correct then. I have looked at some of my other pages on the site and they all seem to have the correct name. Is that all I need to do? Cheers
Jack_mcs
If the title in the web browser is the same as the product title on the page, then it is probably working correctly. owl17sb
Sorry to be sooooo thick but I am still a bit confused. The url in the web browser when I look at an individual product gives me the following http://willowmaxdesign.com/shop/product_in...;products_id=61 but if I look at a page other than a product then it gives me the correct title as follows http://willowmaxdesign.com/shop/about_us.php. My service provider is Bluevoda and they have sent out information emails which say that all your web pages should be named to identify what that page relates to. The tutorial they show is on an website without a shopping cart so all the pages would be the sort of same like the about_us or information_page. As there is no cart there are no products. In order for me to name each individual product so that in the browser it looks like the about_us url above I need to install the contribution you mentioned earlier. Am I right or have I completely misunderstood. Sorry to be a pain
Jack_mcs
Yes, that is correct. Pages like shipping and privacy are actually named shipping and privacy so when you visit them on your site, that is the name they display. But the product pages are all handled by one file, product_info.php. The product ID is added to the url to give a unique page. But that is no good for the search engines (or for people either), so you need to install Ultimate SO to fix that. It is a simple install conpared to Header Tags so you shouldn't hesitate to install it, in my opinion.
