Installation confusion

Hi -

I am a clueless newbie. I have been reading the other posts and can't seem to figure the installation out. I have a beginner package on Linux at 1and1. I have downloaded the OScommerce.tar file to my desktop (Windows XP). I am trying to use 7zip to access the .tar file. It extracted a "content" file only. I don't see a "catalog" file.

Can anyone give me some direction? What steps should I take next?

Thanks!

Hello Drake, Why don't you try downloading the zip version?

Once downloaded, just unzip (in XP, right click on the zip file and select "Extract ALL") to a folder on your hard drive. For simplicity sake, call this folder "catalog". Then you will need to do the following:

1. Create a blank database via your web hosting control panel.

2. If you want your shop to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog then upload the entire catalog folder to the root directory of your website via FTP. If you want the site to be available at http://www.yourdomain.com then just upload the entire contents of the catalog folder, but not the folder itself.

3. Make sure that the permissions on all of the folders are set to 755, and if that does not work then set them to 777. Make sure that the includes/configure.php file and the admin/includes/configure.php file are set to 777 for the duration of the install. Once the install is complete reset to 644, 444, or 400 depending on your server setup. You can easily set permissions on files and folders by using your FTP client software to do so. Just right click on the file or folder and select CHMOD or Permissions depending on your FTP software.

4. Then go to http://www.yourdomain.com/install or http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/install and begin the install procedure. Your DB Server will probably be 'localhost', your db user name and password (for mysql access) will have been provided to you by your web hosting company. The name of the database you already know - because you just set it up. Do not enable SSL, elect to store sessions in the database and not files (untick the box), and do not enable persistent connections.

5. After the install create a folder called 'backups' inside the 'admin' folder (via FTP), and delete the install folder. Reset permissions on the two configure.php files as mentioned above.

6. Password Protect your 'admin' folder using the Password Protect feature in your web hosting control panel.

The above are general installation tips and should work for most people.

Good luck,

Yes, and when you quote someone else (in this case me) it's normal to attribute it to them.

Did not mean to get you upset Rhea...normally I just post the link but in this case I edited some of the content. Just trying to help someone out...didn't make a dime on it.
