Stretched product images

Some of my product images are wider than they are tall, and some are taller than they are wide.... but all of them are getting stretched or scrunched to fit the default product image size on my main page. How can I avoid this? My product images won't necessarily work with any one-size-fits-all approach...

I *think* you have to set image height and width to "0" in Configuration - Images.

Go to Administration > Configuration > Images. Then where it gives the height and width of the images, remove one or the other an leave blank. That will stop the distorted images

In my case this lead to very large thumbnails. That was until I realised you must have 'Calculate Image Size' = true (mine was set to false for some reason!)

Deleting only one made the images disappear; removing them both did the trick... So did making them both zero. But apparently I need to make my source images a BUNCH smaller, 'cause this freed them up to be their huge, normal selves again!
