muhsinb Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Hi All, me again :P i've got XAMPP up and running on my Windows XP VMWare machine now as a test site. However, i just now thought to myself it wont be a true test, since my live site will be on a Linux box. And also on windows boxes, you can't change permissions like they do on Linux, so i can't have a play :( Well anyway...could anyone recommend a Linux distro for an ABSOLUTE noob. I've NEVER touch Linux environments in the past, well if am honest i've always avoided them LOL, however, i have NO choice now and am determined to learn it now. Most people have recommended Ubuntu and Mandrake for starters...any other opinions? 2nd Question: In a test environment, how do i create a local database? I've created the database on my live site through the CPanel of my host, however, if i want to create another database, they'll charge me £25 and i don't really want to do that, unless i have no option! Any opinions, suggestions are greatly welcome. Best Regards...

natewlew Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Fedora???? You have got to be joking!!!! Just kidding  I would recommend Ubuntu for a desktop. I have never used it to setup a server. They also have a server cd but it doesn't have a graphical desktop on it. You could install the desktop one and then install the server programs you need later with apt-get (very easy to do). I think a good distro to be used a server would be Centos (it has php4 and mysql4 installed by default). It is similar to Fedora. It is a more stable version. Regardless of what distro you use follow the directions on this site. http://www.howtoforge.com/ They have server setup instructions for just about all of the major distribution's. You can also go to http://www.distrowatch.com to see all of the Linux distro's. Other great Open Source (Free) programs: (Free as in free speech not free beer) The Gimp - An image program. | Firefox - All you have to do is add the Web Developer add-on to make this web browser complete. | FileZilla - An ftp program. | Inkscape - A good program to create images with. | Thunderbird - An email program. | Openoffice.org - An office suite that is compatible with MS Office. | Abiword - Another office suite. | Audacity - A sound recording tool. | ddp's Picks | Wordpress - An easy to use blogging software. | Joomla - An easy to use CMS that has ecommerce plug-ins. | Drupal - Another CMS How do I find these programs? Google Search!
