Customers getting turned off by SSL message

Recommended Posts

When customers go to login and the site goes to https they get the following message from thier IE.

The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website.

What causes this message is it a security feature in IE turned up to high? Or a problem with my site?

Thanks

It's a problem with the site certificate... It may be a self-signed certificate, so that it was created by the provider for you, maybe for a shared ssl setup or something, but the certificate's credentials aren't registered with a high-level certificate authority like thawte or verisign, a "trusted" certificate authority, so the browser kicks up a warning about it to the customers before they go plugging their credit card info into that page...

Well that doest sound good.... Wish I had a better understanding of what going on with the provider. I didnt think it was a shared ssl because I had to purchase a dedicated IP for the SSL. I dont recall this was a problem last year. My certificate expired in January and I had to renew it.

Probably the certificate is not installed properly - paying the money to renew the certificate does not automatically install it on your server. You may need to contact your webhost for help.
