Support needed for more than one image of a product

Hi all,

I've seen requests for this function in numerous posts because I am looking for the same feature enhancement as well.

Allow me to outline the problem. I have not seen anyone describe this well enough yet, to make the issue crystal clear.

The product listing has support for only one product image. The image size handling defined in the "configuration" section of the administration tool offers some control for sizing but it is really just handling the size constraints on the one supported image. This allows the admin to arrive at a uniform table layout in the product category and detail listing so that the tables don't dynamically adust to the many different image sizes. When a user clicks on the "click to enlarge" text on the product details page, the original image opens in a new window without the size constraints defined in the configuration section.

If the original image is not much larger than the constrained sizes defined in the configuration section, there is very little image size difference once the user "clicks to enlarge". You can overcome this to some degree by using a large image for the one supported product image, and rely on the image handling defined previously to shrink the image to fit the category and product details displays. Now when a user clicks on the "click to enlarge" link, the full size image pops up in a new window.

This is a workaround, but the website owner is now stuck with an exponential increase in bandwidth consumption factored by the number of large images that get served with each page load. Naturally any admin would prefer to load small images in the product category and details pages to conserve bandwidth and improve page load times. I think most admins like myself would defer to the economy of smaller images.

The shopper would prefer to see a large detailed product image.

Here is my suggestion.

We would need an additional product detail field for a second larger image when editing product details. The "click to enlarge" code can be modified to load the second larger image instead of the first default smaller image.
