Problem with creating an account

Hi, I originally tried posting this message in Installation and Configuration and didn't get a reply to my problem. If you can help, I would really appreciate it as I am getting rather frustrated at this point...

I've discovered a problem in my OSC site that I'm still working on, which is in its final stages finally.

When a user creates an account, from their end everything looks fine. But when I go into the admin section and try to edit the account I get this error:

After investigating the problem, I believe that when the account is created, OSC (or MYSQL) uses the default value (which is 0) for the customers_id field in the address_book table and also in the customers_default_address_id field in the customers table.

It also failed to create a new customer ID entry for customers_info, which I found a workaround by setting both primary keys to the same auto_increment value. (Probably not the best way but it works for now.)

I've poured over the code in create_account.php and can't seem to figure why it isn't inserting the $customer_id value into the fields. Would someone mind looking at it to see if I'm missing anything? Also I'm open to suggestions on the MYSQL database as well....

After investigating the problem, I believe that when the account is created, OSC (or MYSQL) uses the default value (which is 0) for the customers_id field in the address_book table and also in the customers_default_address_id field in the customers table.

So - you're saying that *every* new customer is being assigned the same id of zero in the address_book and the customer tables?

There is no default set in the db for the customers_default_address_id so how would it "know" to set it to zero ?

It also failed to create a new customer ID entry for customers_info, which I found a workaround by setting both primary keys to the same auto_increment value. (Probably not the best way but it works for now.)

Hm. Not very safe really.

If you wanted to do this typd of insert, it would be safer to let php generate a random 6 diigt number, and then register that as a variable and let the OSC application insert/update this number into the tables.

I've poured over the code in create_account.php and can't seem to figure why it isn't inserting the $customer_id value into the fields.

can you post some server spec's ? I looked at the file you posted - and it certainly looks "normal".

My guess is that the id session is being registered properly for some reason - but is likely server side.

does your register session look like this :

windows or linux?

php version?

osc version?

are you setting the register_globals in your own ini file ?

does the rest of the array insert properly ? i.e. firstname, lastname, address, etc)?

does your insert function look like this :

function tep_db_insert_id() {

return mysql_insert_id();

}

and the action look like this :

$customer_id = tep_db_insert_id();

Thanks for the reply. I did manage to find the solution by searching online.

The problem is with the persistent database setting in the configure files. For some reason it needs to be set to false. I changed that and it all worked like it should.

On your reply you stated that my workaround for customers_info wasn't safe. How is it unsafe? (on security it is only storing account creation date, login times, etc.)

Now that it is fixed I changed the auto_increment feature off, so now the code should be setting the value of the field.

Becuase the insert is done in two indiviual insert statements, theoretically you could have two clients registering near the same time - and separate values would be assigned. By registering the ID within the php code, this would remove this room for error.
