Keep getting "register_globals is disabled" messages

I downloaded and installed oscommerce 2.2 onto my public_html root server. But

each time I click on http://myserver/catalog/install/ I get the following message:

“FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!”

I’ve searched the forum for every bit of help I can find. I have tried all the suggestions mentioned. I even

downloaded and installed the register_globals_v1.5_bug_fixes.txt.

It says the following:

“In both includes/functions/session.php files, replace the link_session_variable function with the following code:”

But there is no link_session_variable function in my session.php file.

So I just inserted the code anyhow, along with the other codes it suggested.

Still I get the same message: “FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!”

Here is what I have on my server.

MySQL client version: 4.1.21

localhost

* Server version: 4.1.21-standard-log

* Protocol version: 10

* Server: Localhost via UNIX socket

* MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

I also show an additional www on my root server which I did not install my oscommerce files onto. I do

not know if that makes any difference or not.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a clear solution as to how to correct this problem so that I could get on to installing oscommerce program.

Thanks in advance.
