How can Account holders can't use express checkout?

When someone who already has an account tries to checkout using theProceed Directly to Checkout, they are just returned to the checkout page. To most users this is confusing, as there is no message which tells them why they are just returned to the checkout page. It is frustrating for some, who complain, as they seem to be caught in a loop.


Is it correct that if they already have an account, they cannot use the express checkout? Is there a module which will let a customer purchase without an account regardless if they already have an account? Is there a way for a notice to popup telling the purchaser that they must log in.


I think that people often forget their login information, so just try to checkout without it. It drives them nuts and us as well as they complain bitterly. Need some help or advice on this one.
