Finding Products to Sell...steps to take??

Hello everyone,

I have been setting up a store for some friends and now would like to create my own store, but here's the problem....I have no products and I'm unsure of where to start looking to obtain them. I've looked around here at the forums, and it's odd, but I haven't found much conversation about WHERE to get products.

Can anyone here recommend a way for a one-person operation to find products to sell? I've been interested in companies that offer drop-shipping services as this would be ideal for me. But I quickly became discouraged after finding company after company that seemed to raise "red flags" as being scams online.

Is there a reputable company that offers drop shipping?

Where can I find a list of wholesalers?

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer...

Adam

No offense, but you're kidding, right?

Is it so obvious? If this is a really stupid question, I apologize. I wasn't kidding....now I feel stupid that's for asking that's for sure.

I just don't know where to start with finding a product supplier.

Is it so obvious that you're kidding? Well, I invite you to walk up to a total stranger on the street and ask them the question you asked here. They'll ask you what you're interested in, where do you excel, is it goods or services, basically: what do you want to be when you grow up :)

Perhaps what I'm trying to say is this isn't an oscommerce-related question you ask. This is a life question.

Geez Jon,

I've obviously touched a nerve with you. Again, I feel the need to apologize for such a question if it is indeed unappropriate. I didn't think it was when I posted.

I guess I was asking for advice on how one might find a company that offers wholesale products with drop shipping services. I was not asking for advice on what particular products to sell.

I posted here because I thought this was an OSC related question...OSC is designed for managing and maintaining an online storefront, is it not? However, I can see maybe this is better asked in a forum for e-commerce or small business...

Your replies contain what I consider unwarranted sarcasm. I was asking a REAL question seeking REAL advice. If that was an unappropriate or just plain stupid question, then I apologize.

You will proabaly not get many answears on this, those who know good drop shippers guard them jealously against potential competitors.

You should check relevant directories and do some googeling....

it is not easy and not simple to find a reliable company the drop shipping business is full of scams and trouble and the real guys with the sources will not tell you about any company like that because they want to have as little competition as possible.

my advise look for local guys I’m here in NY and there is allot of them i don't know why their are so hiding but if you search good and ask around you will find them one time i was even watching an electronics store for a week to see what company’s are supplying products for here

But one thing is the Maine problem you will have to have a legit company to work with company’s like that,

with tax id and a resell certificate.

after that you all set, try watching stores and talk around with people that's how i got all my wholesalers resources!

forget about drop shipping they will charge you allot of money for it and the prices will not be good

Don't fall to all of the scams that you see on the internet they all using very strong and tempting words but expect words they don’t sell you nothing!

Hi Adam,

I must say I sort of agree with Jon although he could have put it (a lot) better.

You should consider selling things (or selling to people) you are passionately interested in because unless you are extremely lucky you'll have to put in plenty of hard graft b4 you start to make a decent return on your investment. As drop-shipping is the easy route everyone is doing it so the returns are small. At first you'll be company director, accountant, office boy and everything in-between.

toyicebear, yos40, and radders....

Thank you for your helpful advice and answers to my question. You have all clearded it up for me and I appreciate it. I will start with a search for local wholesale companies, and also do some research into the products that I would be interested in selling.

Thanks again and have a great day!

Adam,

If you read my postings to you in a grumpy voice, I can understand why you thought me rude and sarcastic. Rather, reread them in a calm voice. You didn't touch a nerve at all! I do apologise to you. It is very difficult to offer advice when the question you pose is so broad. With no mention of what kind of product you'd like to sell through an osCommerce solution, I honestly have no idea where your interests lie.

I have been in business a looooooong time and what I sell encompasses my passions. Work at what you love and what makes you happy.

Once you nail down the kind of product line or service you wish to sell, you can search for wholesalers. Building a reputation and a network takes time, and patience and persistence pay well. As well, exhaustively research your ideas. Building a solid business plan to measure successes & failures is paramount.

I know I am not the most diplomatic crayon in the box. As with my company, I am also a slow & steady work in progress.
