Text box or open field for Attributes

In Product Attributes, is there a way for an Option Value to be something other than a drop down... specifically a text area (aka text box aka open field) where customers can just type in something? I'm talking about large ones too, like 100's of words if needed.

 

It would also be neat if you could put images into the drop down Values instead of just text options... like boxes of color if they are choosing a font color or font examples if they are choosing a font (we are selling banners and want a few options for the customer to choose from, such as Font and Font color, as well as the above open text field so they can tell us what they want the banner to say).

Not without major modifications to the product_* tables.
