manufacturer search in header

I would like to add the search box/bar to the header of one of my stores. I know how to put the search box in the header, but I cant seem to get the manufacturer box to work.

 

I dont want to just show the manufacturers, I want to be able to select them for the search criteria just the same as on the advanced_search.php.

 

I also have a dumber (if that is a word) question! :blush: Where does one control the border around the whole site? I would like to have a border around the entire site, just a skinny little ole border, nothing special.
