Azure Moon
Hi Everyone, A total and complete newbie here, so please be kind and use laymen's terms. My site was pre-built and is version 2.2 MS2. I want to start adding products/items to my site, however, I am confused as to what is the correct format for entering a product's weight. On the add new product page it has "Product Weight" and directly to the right of that a window/area to enter said weight. It DOES NOT have an arrow to click on that would give me a choice of ounces or pounds. I looked in the Knowledge Base and that shows a page completely different from mine...that one has an arrow to click on...so I'm assuming that I have a earlier version than the one shown in the Knowledge Base. So...using the version I currently have, how do I enter a product's weight? For example, if a product weighs 2 ounces, do I enter it as 2 oz, or 2.0 oz? And what about pounds...say another product weighs 1 1/2 pounds, do I enter 1.5 pounds, or 1.5 lbs? Or what about a product that weighs 1 pound and 11.2 ounces? How would I enter that, or do I just round up the weight to the next full ounce/pound? Is it just one number after the decimal point, i.e., 2.0, or is it 2.00? I need to get my business up and running, but without the exact format for entering weight, I'm at a stand still...and losing money fast. I'm hoping there's a way to do this, because being so new to all of this, I'm terrified of the thought of upgrading something and screwing it up. I need help please. I understand the 4 oz is .25 - however - do I simply enter .25 oz? What is the extension, i.e., oz for ounce, lb for pound? What if a product only weighs 1 ounce...then what do I enter? Please clarify. Brightest Blessings, Azure Moon
kallista
When i entered just .25 into my weight box, it auto came up .25 in pounds, meaning 1/4th of a pound, which is 4 oz, but i know some wont get the .25 and have it reg into 4 oz, I have asked many people and read all i could and i cant find where to make it into showing Ouces or OZ. So most people do it in kilo, that doesnt help me so i left ti as that in mine. Sorry couldnt help more Blessed Be kalli
Jack_mcs
The unit of measure is defined in the shipping modules that use it, like UPS,USPS and Zones. Flat rate and tables just use numbers so that is all that's needed. If you want to display the weight somewhere else in the shop, then you would need to code that in. I understand that I would have to enter .25 for 4 ounces, however, what would I enter for a product that only weighs 1 ounce? And what would I put for a product that weighs say 6 pounds, 11.6 ounces? Do I have to round everything up to the nearest ounce or pound? That hardly seems right. Someone out there must have had to deal with this...help! chrisjat
First, stop the product weight from displaying on your front end. Just enter your weight as 1.1ponds or whatever, rounding wont matter because the customer will not see it, and it will not really affect your shipping cost if it's off by an oz or two. Second, add the "Product Extra Fields" contribution. What you can do is.. a. Add one field where you can enter 1pound 2oz. b. Add two fields, one for ponds, the other for oz. That would solve your problem. You will still have the product's weight for shipping, and product's weight in a user friendly format on your front end. see: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2202/

I found a web site that gave me the correct weight for everything (http://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_common.htm). Being a newbie, I had no clue how to enter the weight and I couldn't find an answer anywhere. Like I said, the picture in the Knowledge Base is completely different from what I have...so I was in a minor state of panic. Now let me see if I understand you correctly. If I download your contribution, it will make it similar to the one in the Knowledge Base and make it much more user friendly? You said that I should stop the weight from displaying on my front end...again...newbie here, so I don't quite understand that statement. Would your contribution fix that too? Any further clarification will be greatly appreciated. Brightest Blessings, Azure Moon

But my suggestion is instead of the customer seeing the decimal value of the weight as you would enter it, you could delete the weight in the front end. So you are still entering this decimal value, but only you see it. I am just assuming that your site is displaying 1.5 on your front end, honestly I am not sure how its displayed as my products do not have a weight. If it is showing 1.5 instead of 1 pond 8oz, you can add this contribution so that you have more product information fields. You would just make a feild called "Weight" and enter whatever value you want in there. It will not affect anything, except show the customer a more friendly value for your product's weight. ie Weight: 1 Pound 6 OZ So, lets say you entered in the actual products weight like you do now, 1.5.. then with this contribution you entered 2 pounds, 12 OZ, the cart does not care that you entered this, it's just going to show it to the user, and change your shipping using the 1.5 as it always has. Can anyone confirm the way osCom displays the weight when a decimal value is entered? Was your only concern about how you enter a decimal, or that you didn't want the customer to see the decimal value instead of the imperial value? The rest of the world solved this a long time ago by using a new, real measurment based on math called "metric". No crazy fractions and such. Some smart people they are.;)

My initial question was what format do I use to enter the weight of a product and I found my answer using a weight conversion website. I just checked my site and the products I just entered and the weight is not listed anywhere, so that isn't a problem. I'm entering one ounce as 0.0625 - for anyone wondering. I guess I wound up answering my own question afterall...and after much searching. Mucho thanks for everyones help! cryosi
Help needed i have put weight as "QUOTE(omgula @ Jan 11 2007, 01:42 PM) * Goto admin >> Configuration >> Shipping/Packaging >> Change "Package Tare Weight" to 1.0 as Hebe73 suggests. Now you have a base config for your weight, so 1.0 tare weight = 1.0 kg!" tare weight 1kg i have changed weight to kg (it was in Lbs) when i enter product weight it enters as 0.25 instead of 0.258 ( so 258ml would be 258 grams, (There are 1000 milliliters in one liter)) when check out comes, 2 products with total weight of 2x258= 0.516grams yet somehow instead of paying for under 1kg shipping weight it prices it as 2 kg. 1 product takes weight to 1kg + price yet 5kgs or above goes to 10kg price anyone got any ideas....
