baserunner
Hi all, I am pretty new to os commerce and e-commerce in general and have some questions. a) Is it a MUST to have SSL Server certificate, do i need to buy one from an issuer (e.g. verisign?) B) How does the whole payment work? I do not belive that simply enable the default payment modules does it all, there must be a place to configure and test them. I have tryed to find the answers in this forum and in the knowledge base, but had no luck and got even more confused. I hope some1 will point (or push) me in the right direction. If there are already threads/articles that answer my questions, please post a link or reference here so i will be able to find and read them. thanks in advance and a happy new year Baserunner :'(
bill110
If you collect any information about customers then it is imperitive you have SSL. 1) Cust knows the connection is secure and trusts the information is encripted. 2) Your liability is worth the expense. 3) Having no SSL certificate will chase away potential customers. Purchase one from a reputable source. There are ways to set up your own but the customers will get a message that says the certificate is not from a trusted source or could not be verified. Testing payment modules depends on which you choose. Paypal has something at their site called Sandbox that is for testing. You can place orders through it with no actual charges. most others have similar. baserunner
thanks for the reply. So i will have to setup a SSL certificate on our server in order to use any of the payment modules (Credit card) from oscommerce. Is there some info how the payment modules get configured? I mean i guess i have to tell them at least my bank account details...right???
rossoe
When you say : If you collect any information about customers then it is imperitive you have SSL. Do you mean financial info or anything including simple address and user name details ? My intention is to install paypal IPN 1.4 contrib, but I only have shared SSL - is this sufficient for my needs ?
Jack_mcs
Yes to both questions. Some people don't consider shared ssl's professional but if it doesn' bother you then it will work fine.
