acrylic-display Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Hello, I hope sombody can help me. I have an oscomerce website www.acrylic-display.co.uk which I use a template. I have a problem where google will only list my index page and wont list any of my produt pages. Im not sure what im doing wrong. I have installed most of the seo contributions eg. meta tags etc. I know that on msn search I am listed on number 1 on page one for many of my keywords and my products/info pages are indexed aswell. Could someone please lead me in the right direction of where I am going wrong. Thank you in advance. Adam
jpweber Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Adam, with Google, you'll just have to wait. But your product pages are being indexed. If you go to google and do site:acrylic-display.co.uk, you'll get these results: Your Google Results and you'll see that many of your product pages have been indexed. With MSN and Yahoo, you can get listed in their SERPS (search engine results pages) rather quickly, like within a month. With Google, it can take 6 months to start getting SERPS. There are many theories as to why, but you're just going to have to be patient with Google. In the meantime, continue to add content, product descriptions, and you might want to consider installing a contribution such as The Header Tags Controller which works nicely with Ultimate SEO's, which you already have. Header Tags Controller will allow you to make unique page titles and descriptions, which is important (especially the titles) for SEO (search engine optimization). Good luck, and be patient with Google. acrylic-display Posted January 1, 2007 Author Posted January 1, 2007 Thanks Jason, I didnt realise it had listed all of those. I have been listed with google for months though now and still nothing seems to be happening. I have installed The Header Tags Controller ages ago and have put in titles for each and a description on the admin poducts page but im not sure if this has stopped working for some reason!
Jack_mcs Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 There are a few problems with how you have Header Tags installed. The changes to the index page were not made, most likely due to the template you are using, so your category titles are not changing or being displayed as the page headings. On the product pages, the title doesn't match the page heading, again due to the template. I can't say that making those changes will make enough of a difference but they would help. dwalters Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Hi, I am not sure if this is where I should be asking as I am not used to forums, but I need help so here it goes. I installed the contrib Google XML Sitemap and when I ran the setup in admin it said it was successful and yet when I checked the URL for the sitemap it gave me this: This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. − <sitemapindex> − <sitemap> − <loc> http://www.allaboutwicker.com/sitemapcategories.xml </loc> <lastmod>2007-01-02</lastmod> </sitemap> − <sitemap> <loc>http://www.allaboutwicker.com/sitemapproducts.xml</loc> <lastmod>2007-01-02</lastmod> </sitemap> </sitemapindex> I have no idea what to do now. I think this contrib would help me to get on google, but I can't get it to work. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
jpweber Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Your sitemap.xml should be titled just that -- sitemap.xml, and should be located in your root directory. Then you can go to google webmaster tools, and add your site's sitemap, and you will be spidered. dwalters Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Your sitemap.xml should be titled just that -- sitemap.xml, and should be located in your root directory. Then you can go to google webmaster tools, and add your site's sitemap, and you will be spidered. I tried to change the file per what you said, but it really didn't run then. It ran the other way and gave me this as my URL for the sitemap: http://www.allaboutwicker.com/sitemapindex.xml It just won't come up right when you plug that in. Any other suggestions? Thanks
dwalters Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I went into my sitemapindex.xml file and this is what I see: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84"> <sitemap> <loc>http://www.allaboutwicker.com/sitemapcategories.xml</loc> <lastmod>2007-01-02</lastmod> </sitemap> <sitemap> <loc>http://www.allaboutwicker.com/sitemapproducts.xml</loc> <lastmod>2007-01-02</lastmod> </sitemap> </sitemapindex> I am not very literate on these files so I don't have a clue if this looks right or not. What does it mean "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it." Again, Thanks for any help!!!
jpweber Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Google Sitemaps are feeds. The error message just means that there's no stylesheet present on how to display the page. Stylesheets are only needed for when you want to view it in a browser. Since nobody needs to view this in their browser, it doesn't really matter. Feeds are meant for readers and stuff like that, not for web viewing. If you really have trouble, and when viewing your generated xml document in notepad, it doesn't look right, you can use the e-mail link in my profile (not the message one) and I'll try to help. But I don't think you'll get anything more out of these forums other than what I've said above. dwalters Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Thanks all for your help on the google xml sitemap info. I think I understand it now. I was thinking that this was an actual link that would be on my site, but it is just a file to create and submit to google, which I have done. Thanks Again!
Jack_mcs Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 That's not the way to do it though. The sitemaps need to be updated on a regular basis. To do that, a cron job needs to be setup so the sitemaps are recreated. The maps are stored on your site and google knows to come look at them. If you install the contibution I mentioned, it will do all of that for you except for setting up the cron job, which is easy. Sorry, but I have no clue what that is. I believe that I installed the right contrib, but now Jack says I need to something else. Any help is much appreciated as I really need this site to start generating more traffic and I would think this google sitemap thingy might help me with google. Thanks!
jpweber Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 A cron job is something you set up in your web host's control panel. I don't even know how to explain it. I have a cron job set up to update my currencies every 6 hours. I have no clue how Jack sets up a cron job, however, to update his sitemap .... like, let's say if he's added products. So this just a wild guess, and nothing more, but you would probably log in to your host's control panel, click cron jobs, and then put in something similar to this: /usr/bin/lynx -source http://www.yoursite.com/yoursitemap.xml Again, that's just a stab in the dark. It'd be more appropriate to consult Jack on this one. Good luck. Jack_mcs Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Cron is a program installed on most servers that allow scripts to be ran automatically at preset times. Since the google sitemaps need to be updated every time you add products, running a cron job will accomplish this and save you the bother of having to do it. If you installed the contribution I mentioned, then you can go to http://yoursite.com/googlesitemap/index.php and it will create the sitemaps for you and provide the command needed for the cron job. You would need to go into your hosts control panel and create it. It is a relatively painless issue once you have done it once or twice. You may need to ask your host how you get to that section of your control panel though. If they are using CPanel, then there is a link in it for Cron. My purpose wasn't to confuse you with this. You are correct about the google sitemap being helpful to your site. But if it is not done properly, you would just be wasting your time and effort. dwalters Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Thank you so much Guys. Your the Best! I think I have it now. I found the cron jobs command area in my cpanel and input the info I got from my admin area site map feature, I think it might be a slightly different version then Jack showed, but very similar. I guess that should do it. BTW, Did anyone have any trouble installing the wishlist contrib? I've been working on this for a while and it doen't work. Probably conflicting with one of my earlier contribs or something. I am going to totally go over everything again now and try to see if I missed something last night. Thanks Again for all your help!

Did I guess right, or was it something different? Hi Jason, The admin feature gave me the cron command as: php /home/wicker2/public_html/sitemaps.index.php I input that in the cpanel cron jobs slot and set it for every day at midnight. Does this sound right to you? Let me know if not. I just checked out your site. It is awesome! I got to see the wishlist in action. I sure hope to figure this out. It is driving me crazy and using a lot of my time and brain power, of which I only have so much of, HA, HA. Anyway, I had to take a phone call and am now hopefully able to anylize this thing again. I only have a few minutes until I have to make a run out, so I better get to it. Thanks again
dwalters Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Hey Jason, I went in to try this wishlist thing again and as soon as I add the 1st part of Step 3 for the coding in product_info.php I get this error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '}' in /home/wicker2/public_html/product_info.php on line 250 I don't get it as I copied it exactly as it was in the destructions. Any Ideas? Leslie
jpweber Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Yes, my idea is that you have a parse error in your product_info.php. lol ... Not rocket science. If you want to send it to me using the e-mail link, I can winmerge it and find the syntax error -- which is probably at line 250, but it may not be.
