Preparing for the future: a question about ugrading

With Version 3.0 on the horizon, it got me to thinking what steps are going to be necessary in order to upgrade when the time arrives.

For those using a default template, I would imagine the process is going to be pretty straightforward. However, I currently use a heavily modified template that I purchased. Functions are moved all over the place from their previous spot. Yeah, yeah, I know using premade templates aren't the best way to learn to customize or a good way to learn PHP. But I didn't have much of a choice.

As we know, template information is embedded within the php code. How exactly will upgrading to Version 3 work? Am I going to have to meticulously disect all of my pages in order to transfer my current template over? For someone with little or no PHP experience, this sounds like a daunting task. I guess I better start reading that PHP book I purchased over a year ago.

There is no way you can plan for how to upgrade since MS3 isn't even completed yet. The code that is there now may not be in the final version. Plus, when it comes out, many of the current contributions won't work with it. Although, some will be incorporated into the core code, there is no way to tell what those will be right now. Plus, by the time it is released and the adventourous among us give it a try and report the problems, another year will have passed. So, in short, it is not worth thinking about at this point. Ask the question again ten months from now and you may get a better idea of what is needed.

I had an older version of osCommerce, and I recently upgraded to the newest version.

It wiped out ALL of my products from my website. I have no idea why, but it was VERY annoying. I followed the directions exactly. My layout and all my images remained, but all the products and categories disappeared.
