Can you avoid duplicating images for Secure Pages?

On my server there are two root files (http and https) for secure and non-secure pages. When on a secure page the images are taken from the https images folder, but this means that I have to duplicate all my images so that they appear when a customer is on the secure page. Is there any way I can get the secure pages to take the images from the http images folder to stop the need for duplication?

 

I've had a go at changing the DIR_WS_IMAGES in my config files and managed to get them to show by changing this to the full path of the http images folder, but this slowed everything right down so I don't really want to use this.

 

Any ideas would be appreciated.
