aidanodr Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Hi guys, Recently we decided to enable SSL for our website. We asked the Host Company to do so, all was fine until THE HOSTING COMPANY asked the following question: How have you got your site configured - is it http://www.sitename.com OR http://sitename.com? Their is a difference which will you be using, or something to that extent was the jist of the question. I havent configured the site either way. I thought this would be a host issue. Can someone enlighten me as to why this question was asked? Please explain dummies guide fashion if possible. Unfortunately said hosting company techs are arrogant - when I asked the above question, as in Why, I basically got back you should know if you design sites, no further help, Grrr, Cheers aidan
Jack_mcs Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 An ssl certificate will only work with one domain name, and that includes the www. So if your site is setup as www.mydomain.com and the ssl is for domain.com, it will generate an error message. So you need to set up your includes/configure.php file to use the one that your ssl certificate is for. If your host won't answer, or is unable to answer, such a basic question, it might be time to look for a new host. If you are having problems over such a minor issue, what is going to happen when something more serious comes up? Just my opinion, for what it's worth. aidanodr Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 Hi Jack_mcs, Thanks for that info. Unfortunately I am doing this site for someone else, that is their decision - to move that is. If it were my choice I would not have went with that hosting company first day. Thanks again. SSL is now enabled at the site. The next question I have is - For the moment I want to secure the ADMIN FOLDERS ONLY with ssl. I already have the admin password locked for access. What files need editing for this to happen? What lines need to be edited in same? A sample edited lines listed here perhaps? Cheers Aidan
Jack_mcs Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Edit the admin/includes/configure.php file. Change all occurrences ( a few at the top) of http: to https:.
