Buttons for categories

Hello,

 

I have created buttons that I want to use for the categories rather than just have text links. Now that I have them, I don't know how to make them work. Do I upload them into a certain file and create some html code in the left column php file with the information to the buttons? If so, would this work for all pages?

 

I am trying to give the site a different look from the default look. Any help is appreciated on this as well as bordered boxes and colored backgrounds.
