runnin without a www.domain.com

I am attempting an install of os commerce 2.2 which I downloaded about a wek ago, version tep_snapshot-20020918.tar.gz. I am attempting to run it from an ip address without a domain name, as in http://65.39.147.229/catalog/ (currently disabled) on a redhat 7.2 with apache 1.3.20

My problem is that this crashes my apache server after I define default.php in my directory indexing. not precisely after this change as it has crashed after enabling SSL and another time for an unknown cause.

It seems to work fine for about a day then crashes - (seems to coincide with my time to live settings)

Is this a bug, is this just the way oscommerce is - that it needs a fully qualified domain name to operate?

any help would be appreciated

Sounds like a server misconfiguration somewhere ;)

so technically os commerce should be able to work with just an ip address? - ive been pluggin away at this for a couple of days now and want to direct my energies to the right source - but im lost as to where to go next  guess ill try installing it under my domain in a directory to see how that goes.
