What's the "CVS" directory ? Anybody can tell me?

I've noticed that, in every sub-directories,this is a directory called CVS,

and there are 3 files in it , Entries ,Repository and Root .

 

What's that? how there work? Are they necessary ?or say , Can I del them

all ?

CVS is a piece of software that developers use to track changes to the code etc... and it uses that CVS directory to help it out.
