Moving the app to a new dir

I installed osCommerce without any problem on a Linux system, Apache 2.2, MySQL 4.1, PHP 5.1. I had some problems with PHP and I added other stuff to Apache so now I have a new compile of Apache in a new directory, and I added PHP 4.4. So far so good. I created a soft link to put catalog in the new place, but

I get the message "Unable to connect to database server!" when I try to start osCommerce in the new place. I am able to login to MySQL so I know its there and running. Question: What do I need to do to fix this? Do I need to clean out the database and start over? Thanks.
