Virgin to SOC!!! - What have I gotten into? HELP

Hello,

Please be kind I have no idea what I have gotten myself into. I have developed my own web pages before using mainly MX Dreamweaver and Flash (only novice - learnt as I went). Now I am in the process of setting up the following web shop www.frankiejswholesale.com and things are going from bad to worse. I keep getting messages saying I can not write to the file as I do not have permission - "WHAT THE"- also unlike my other web pages I can not seem to edit my index pages (change words and or images) HOW IS THIS DONE?. Once I had a full crop of hair, didn't smoke or drink now I'm bald smoke like a chimmey and an alcoholic ! PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME :'(

here are a few suggestions:

 

Look to get an editor that works well with php / html. I use Komodo, but there are many others out there.

 

Get a good ftp program to upload changes you have made to the files.

 

Have two sites set up (both can use the same DB) and use one for testing and one for live.

 

Use the site www.php.net to reference what PHP functions do and learn PHP so you understand how things are working together.

 

Review various topics here as there is a huge amount of information contained here and generally try using google to perform the searches verses the search tool here (this forum search tool is not the best).

 

When requiring assistance (everyone does eventually) write out clear and descriptive sentances outlining the issue and where it is found, (ie index.php?cPath=1 is not displaying correctly...)

 

there are just a few suggestions, osC is not a simple program that you will just pick up and plug away at (like any other large project). You need to learn what is being done, how and why. There are many things that are differently done with this project verses others found out there, but then it is free and it works well :)

it's not that hard, and there's plenty of ppl here to help.

just deal with one problem at a time, post them in the general support area, and give a detailed eplanation of the problem.

 

start yourself a tasklist, and a bug list, to help you stay focussed & organised.

it'll hopefully lower that stress.....
