Lisa4720 Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 What is the best most user friendly way of making a backup ? I was thinking using the ftp in windows to just copy the whole thing on to my hdd. I also noticed a backup function in oscommerce as well. Are there do and don'ts ? You're reading a backup freak here  We had many different programmers from all around the world entering our site to do specialized work and each time they completed and before going on to the next programmer I made a backup. To do that I use FireFox's FTP extension. It's free and easy to setup without ever leaving your FireFox browser. Just access your site, set to "auto", click on your store or the entire site and download it back to your site. Once downloaded you can save it to CDRW. Can't tell you how many times the backup saved us. Once a programmer deleted several files by mistake and we saw our entire site, not just the store, disappear. That was scary! I had a backup tho' and putting the files back from the backup worked perfectly! So the answer is yes, no matter what FTP program you use, you should make a full backup of your store and do it often. When I was looking for an FTP app afew weeks ago, I came across this link ... http://products.secureserver.net/guides/windowsxpftp.pdf Windows xp has an app built in for FTP tranfers.
natewlew Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 You also need to make a backup of your database from the admin section or with program like phpmyadmin. Other great Open Source (Free) programs: (Free as in free speech not free beer) The Gimp - An image program. | Firefox - All you have to do is add the Web Developer add-on to make this web browser complete. | FileZilla - An ftp program. | Inkscape - A good program to create images with. | Thunderbird - An email program. | Openoffice.org - An office suite that is compatible with MS Office. | Abiword - Another office suite. | Audacity - A sound recording tool. | ddp's Picks | Wordpress - An easy to use blogging software. | Joomla - An easy to use CMS that has ecommerce plug-ins. | Drupal - Another CMS How do I find these programs? Google Search!

I re-read that and thought about coming back to clarify and decided you were bright enough to figure it out. Any method of FTP will work. In fact, if you have a Gmail account you have 2gig available to you for storage space and can easily save your backup in your Gmail account and it will always be available to you where ever you are! BTW, my company uses (Intel) Macs - we wouldn't know what a "Windows" anything is but it's nice to know there is a built-in ftp program. I think all modern day operating systems have them, including Macs. I just like the ease of the FTP program included in FireFox. You can have your site up in one tab and be editing it in another tab through back and forth uploads. Lisa (Greene)
Guest Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 nate is correct, Make sure you backup your MYSQL Database just in case. Just copying the catalog folder won't do it. Wally

Wally Being a noob, it don't want to "break" something making a backup  I noticed that on the admin page there is a backup option. Is there an issue using that ? Is there someting I should know before attempting it ?
