Hi

What did this mean, and how do I handle this?

Warning: session_save_path() [function.session-save-path]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 18231 is not allowed to access owned by uid 0 in /usr/local/www/berggreendk/www/catalog/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 148

OBS: I am using a webhotel and do not have access to the basic configuration of the webserver.

Knud

Both of you, get in touch with your Hosting Provider's tech department and ask them to turn off SAFE_MODE on your site.

Some places have it on by default and some have it off. You both need it off. Tell them that it is &*^%$#( up your site and don't let them give you that "security" crap.

Hope this helps

Yes, exactly. Just another line number ;-)

I have asked my hosting provider to turn it off when I changed from a Windows based server to an FreeBSD-server.

The answer was that under windows it was not a big problem but on the *nix-based servers it is a potential safety risk.

And I have to say, that security has a very high priority for me no matter what other say.

So... Is there anything else to do?

Well, in actual fact, no.

Safe mode protects THEIR security, not yours. Basically, if memory serves correctly, safe_mode being on prevents sites on that particular server from running scripts (it's malicious scripts against people browsing that they are concerned about) unless they are in the cgi-bin folder, which, of course, if you tried to cram all the scripts in osCommerce into, you'd have a lot of fun trying to get it to work.

As I see it, you have two choices. Tell them you're running osC and see if they will move you to a server that has safe mode off or find a new hosting company,

On my hosting platform, register_globals and safe_mode were off by default and I had no problem installing the package in 5 minutes.

Every time this problem shows up, we tell the person to have their hosting company turn safe_mode off, they do and their site works. I'm not aware of a work-around.

Luckily I am.

This is not a major problem and is very simple to remedy.

Go to your osCommerce admin panel --> Configuration --> Sessions, and change the session save path to just tmp with no slash before or after tmp.
