staying logged in problem - sessions and whos_online table

I just installed OsCommerce on a new shared server. (register.com)

 

When I log in I am randomly logged off.

The sessions table is NEVER populated.

After the customer is mysteriously logged out the entry remains in the whos_online table BUT the customer_id field is now '0' and the full_name is guest.

 

Should the session table have values in it when someone is logged in?

Is there somewhere I can see the basic flow of the application?
