warrenerjm Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Hi I am not sure how you test this but can you tell me if my site is slow please? My Webpage It could be me, but one 3rd party programme did say my server was slow, & I can't tell what others are finding. Is there any suggestions I can use if it is. I have a piece of code from Boxtel & thumbnails with GD library, but is there anything else I can do? Thanks for any suggestions. Julie
Daemonj Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Your site loaded in 2.930s for me on a cable connection in Tennessee. In Admin > Configuration > Logging > Display page parse time > set it to true and then you will see a display in the lower left corner of how long your pages are taking to parse. In Admin > Configuration > GZip Compression, if you have it enabled, which you should, ensure that it is set to 1. If the performance of your site is still unacceptable to you, then you will need to work on reducing / optimizing the queries along with the database. I just tried your site again and it took 13.328s to load! :o The problem might be that your server is not able to handle the traffic. Thank you Jim I wasn't sure what those things did in admin, so left alone. I will change them. Will the time to load display be seen by all customers or just admin? I'm on a shared server, as I can't afford a dedicated one yet, so I guess it must be the combined traffic that is slowing it down at some times. I will try & ask my host what they can do to help, but they might say you get what you pay for. As for reducing the queries I think I have read a thread by chemo about that but it was a little over my head. I have also recently read that if you get rid of the "Other customers bought this" box could help. It is quite a good little box as it fills some of my white space in the product info pages. I'm looking at putting the "specials box in the middle column" contribution which could replace that box, as long as that doesn't add more queries! Thanks for your help & advise. If there are any particular suggestions that might help I would be all ears. Julie

Daemonj Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Even if you are on a shared server, if there is a lot of load on that server you can ask your host to move you to a less loaded server. You may also have a host that puts 100 domains per box instead of 40 in which case you should find a new host. The page parse time display will be seen by anyone viewing a page in your catalog. Most surfers ignore the information since it doesn't mean anything to them. You will need to be very comfortable with query and code modification before you start optimizing your site's code. That is good to know Jim. I will ask my host if they can move me. Hopefully if they can they will do it without losing anything! I can but ask. What do you mean 100 domains per box? Is 40 a norm & what should I ask them with this please? I did put the parse time on the site, but quickly undid it as it came up with errors. I will look into that later. I have set the Gzip to true now, & remember asking my host about that a while ago. They said the engineers said it was ok to do & they would contact me if it caused any problems. I do not understand it all, so I will sit & wait. My hosts are excellant for customer service & have been very helpfull, but there are a few things that I am finding that I need & they don't do. As someone who started this all from scratch a year ago they have been a good choice, but hopefully by the time it is due for renewal next year I will understand what I need better. I hope I will have learnt more by then anyhow  Julie
Daemonj Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 You can simply ask your host how many domains are currently being served by your server.
