How to make catagory page show on index.php

I am trying to display the first catagory on the main page instead of the new_products items. Alternatively, I would be just as happy if it would sort in the order of first in to database, first to be seen, instead of showing the highest id number first. Is there a setting or a contribution that i can correct this sorting issue.
